NO-no YES-yes Ikebana

Ikebana is not only what you think it is but a way to familiarize yourself with the wilderness around your neighborhood. We will start each session with a small talk on alternative histories and contemporary practices in both flower arranging and still life. We will then split up for a walk around the block collecting leaves, seed pods and other materials. Return to the studio where we will cull our collection. Arrange, compose, build. Listen to a little lecture on Italian Renaissance and Japanese drawing techniques. Study, draw and paint our arrangements with an eye for organic growth and decay, syntax and form.

Special thanks to Sarah Kantrowitz for the introduction to Ikebana and its synergy with foraging ( Sal Randolph and the three flower protocols of The Order of the Third Bird will also be explored (
